Comparison
SPP Command Deck vs. Redgate Monitor
SQL Server-first monitoring, subscription-licensed
Redgate Monitor (the product most DBAs still know as "SQL Monitor") is a well-regarded, SQL Server-first monitoring tool with real depth on Query Store integration and release tracking. It has genuinely broadened its cloud coverage over the years — Azure SQL Database, Managed Instance, RDS, Aurora, Google Cloud SQL, and PostgreSQL are all supported now.
What it doesn't do is Oracle or MySQL — as of this writing, Redgate Monitor's own edition comparison doesn't list either engine. If your estate is SQL Server plus cloud Postgres, it's a legitimate option. If it's SQL Server plus Oracle, or SQL Server plus MySQL, it can only ever cover part of the estate.
| SPP Command Deck | Redgate Monitor | |
|---|---|---|
| Database engines | SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL | SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and SQL-Server-adjacent cloud engines (Azure SQL, RDS, Aurora, Cloud SQL) — no Oracle, no MySQL |
| Licensing model | Perpetual license, one-time cost per install | Subscription only, per server per year (1-year terms standard) |
| Deployment | Self-hosted only | Self-hosted or SaaS, both tiers |
| Free tier | Personal edition — free forever, up to 2 servers, all four engines | None — 30-day trial only |
| Outbound telemetry | Zero — every outbound call is itemized and individually toggleable | Not independently verified; on-prem AI features reportedly require outbound internet access |
Where Redgate Monitor wins
- Deeper SQL-Server-specific tooling if that’s your only engine — Query Store integration and release/deployment tracking tied into the rest of Redgate’s DevOps product line.
- A SaaS deployment option, if you’d rather not host monitoring infrastructure yourself.
- A more mature product overall — Redgate Monitor has been in the market far longer.
Where SPP Command Deck wins
- Oracle and MySQL coverage, which Redgate Monitor simply doesn’t have.
- Perpetual licensing instead of a recurring per-server subscription.
- A real free tier, not just a time-boxed trial.
